Project description

Urban Tapestry — The Well of Breath

(Between public and private spaces within Taiwan’s urban alleys)

Urban Tapestry reimagines the dense alleys of Taiwanese cities as spaces where light, wind, and human intimacy coexist. At its heart lies a vertical lightwell — the “well of breath” — drawing illumination and air into the compact structure, transforming it into a living organism that inhales and exhales with the rhythm of the city.

Rooted in the spatial fabric of Taiwan’s urban alleys, the project reflects on the delicate balance between public interaction and private retreat. Through vertical apertures and horizontal transparency, the architecture dissolves boundaries between interior and exterior, turning the act of dwelling into a shared yet personal experience. Light and shadow weave through the walls and floors, tracing the passage of time and giving form to the quiet beauty of everyday life. The restrained palette of natural textures—cement walls, timber surfaces, iron elements, and reflective glass—further amplifies this interplay of density and void.

Beyond aesthetics, the project embraces sustainability and human well-being. Passive ventilation, controlled daylight, and locally sourced materials create a breathable, energy-efficient environment that nurtures both body and mind. Ultimately, Urban Tapestry aspires to turn the notion of shelter into sanctuary—an architecture that restores clarity and openness within the compressed fabric of the modern city.
